Landlords Disobey Chuka University's VC Professor Erastus Njoka On Matters Rent
Earlier last week, through the school administration, Chuka University's Vice Chancellor Professor Erastus Njoka gave a notice to all private investors to reduce the amount of rent students should pay to roughly sh.3,000. However, some landlords have refused to concur with the institution's VC saying that they will be at a lose should students pay less than half the semesters rent.
First and fourth years reported back to the university about a week and a half ago and were first forced to complete the remaining fee balance. Back at their hostels, caretakers also asked the students to pay the remaining rent before paying afresh for the duration they will be staying in their bedsitters this semester.
According to a Facebook post by one of CUSA's representatives, students were to report hostels who were charging more than sh.5,000. "Students should only pay for water and electricity" Professor Erastus Njoka had stated yet it seems like the order fell on deaf ears.
Some landlords, however, have decided that students living in their investments should pay half the normal bedsitter rent while others stick to the option of paying the normal full amount. Students living within the school hostels were instructed by the institution's management not to pay a dime.
This has led the students living outside the school's premises to question the role of CUSA's non-resident representative in championing for their rights.
Among the hostels that have disobeyed Professor Erastus Njoka's order are Holime Hostels located about half a kilometer from Ndagani market centre, Royal Suites Hostels located near the school, Almaq Hostels, both Ray & Rayland Hostels, Shepherds Hostels, Daniel Hostels, 2014 Hostels, Jobsy Hostels, Kimberley Hostels and The Martins. All these hostels have either reduced their rates by either two thousand shillings or not even a shilling.
Second and third years are expected to report back in school within the next few weeks even though a considerable number of them can be spotted carrying out their errands in the local Ndagani market or Chuka town.
If your landlord has also demanded a pay of more than Sh.5000 kindly comment on the name of your hostel below or inbox us via email: chukaunigossip@gmail.com. Thanks!
