Chuka University Students Held In Custody By Police To Be Released On A Bail Of Sh. 50,000 Each!

About 18 students were arrested on Monday evening following the strike that ensued a disputed union elections in Chuka University. This was the same students' unrest that led to the burning of one of the University's buses. The chaos also resulted in the indefinite closure of the institution.

Sources claim that approximately eighteen Chuka University comrades were arrested by the anti-riot police officers and taken into custody for allegedly looting shops and stands around the surrounding Ndagani market. The Chuka University students appeared before Principal Magistrate Alfred Kibiru charged with causing chaos on Monday this week, however, they refused to take plea as the the police officers asked a few more days to complete their investigations. About two days ago, a group of Njuri Ncheke leaders from Tharaka-Nithi County have called for the immediate arrest and trial of the Chuka University students who caused the strike over disputed union elections which left property worth millions of Kenya shillings.

Mr. Jonathan Kang'ethe, the Njuri Ncheke leader, had urged the police department to scrutinize the real cause of the furor together with the institution's administration. During the appearance of the students at the court, the police requested for three more days in order to interrogate the comrades that were locked up over the destruction of property. Here are Mr. Alfred Kibiru's words;
They will remain in custody for three days as police carry out their inquest and after which they will be brought back to court,

A report reaching our desks, however, claims that one comrade has been released on a bail of ksh.50,000 that was instantly paid by his father. Tharaka Nithi OCPD Beatrice Kiraguri said that the police would make sure that those who participated in the riots are punished. "They will be charged with destruction of public and private property as well as causing unrest and disturbances in the institution and its environs," Ms Kiraguri affirmed.
