Water Scandal: Here's The Man Responsible For Water Shortage Around Chuka University
The Swahili say 'Maji ni uhai' unfortunately for Chuka University and it's environs, the most epic water shortage is at their necks. Ndagani centre has been hit by major water scarcity and guess who is responsible?
You guessed right! The Chuka University Vice Chancellor - Professor Erastus Njoka. And I am going to reveal why I say it's him and not the Tharaka county government.
During the period we were home for the 4-months strike holiday, Chuka University management apparently launched their water supply project that cost the institution over Ksh.50 million.
They even invited the media to cover the launch which happens to be another cost.
Prof Njoka said that the water was piped from Ruguti River, 22km inside Mt Kenya Forest and was going to serve over 15,000 students and the neighbouring Ndagani community.
The VC assured the Ndagani neighborhood that it would never face any water challenges as it had before. He had a meeting with all the landlords and told them that he would supply uncapped water to their private hostels so that all the students would enjoy clean and fresh water 24-7.
However a few months later, water shortage was a friend of the Chuka fraternity once again. Apparently, Ndagani centre has two water suppliers - Ndagani Water Services Co Ltd. and KK Water Suppliers who, in Njoka's eyes had sparked a good business deal.
So, the promise he had given the landlords was quickly hidden under the wraps and the water supply deal given to KK water company. When some Landlords approached the Vice Chancellor concerning his promise, the professor quickly turned them away asking them to be patient.
But KK Water Co. also claims that the University is not giving full control over the water. "There's the side beyond the university towards Almak hostels and there is that side across the highway opposite Ndagani. The school keeps switching water supply between these two parts of Chuka University community" an insider revealed to me.
Back to the 4-months strike period where we were sent home for breaking a few windows and burning paint off a bus. So why did we go home for a whole 4 months? It's about this same water scandal... we were home so the money that was budgeted for that semester was to be used on the water project and that is the same reason why we were asked to clear our fee balance upon arrival.
Rumour has it that Chuka University got a tender to supply a lot of water to Tharaka Constituency, which is relatively dry and has no clean water for domestic use. In a recent press issue, Vice Chancellor Njoka said
"The county government has a lot of money and because a university is a major transformation tool in the society, we can assist the government to supply water to Tharaka so that the area can be ever green like others. It is simple if only they come and partner with us"
